Leave it to a cottonwood tree to come up with some unusual growth patterns. It’s doubtful anyone knows what made this particular tree grow up a few feet above the ground, turn almost horizontal for a while, and then turn back upward. The camera was aimed parallel with the ground, which is evident by looking at the dark colored tree in the background. A wide angle lens was used to include the lower trunk a few feet above the ground and the overhead upper branches.

Leave it to a cottonwood tree to come up with some unusual growth patterns. It’s doubtful anyone knows what made this particular tree grow up a few feet above the ground, turn almost horizontal for a while, and then turn back upward. The camera was aimed parallel with the ground, which is evident by looking at the dark colored tree in the background. A wide angle lens was used to include the lower trunk a few feet above the ground and the overhead upper branches.
This photograph was made in November 2025 in the Open Space in north Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Open Space forest is adjacent to the Rio Grande river. The delta area on both sides of the river are an ideal environment for cottonwoods. The shallow water table and year round moist soil also host a variety of undergrowth alongside the trees.
