Description
“Whoa, better keep an eye on this one.” Walking the path below this balancing marvel creates a bit of an uneasy feeling. Looking up 80 or 90 feet to this natural marvel, it appears that there is little or nothing keeping the boulder from rolling down the slope. This is one of many “hoodos”* in the Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument. Volcanic activity millions of years ago and erosion since then has produced some uncanny rock formations. This particular formation is one of the taller ones in the monument where the caprock is still in place. Erosion continues and at some time in the future the caprock on this one will fall down, at which time the value of this image will go up. This photograph was made in March 2010.
* hoodoo is the nickname locals in New Mexico use for this type of rock formation
