Boundaries

Description

A boundary might be your neighbor’s fence, or the realm where we live between the earth’s surface and the atmosphere. The boundary might also be the difference between opinions of whether or not photography is art. Painters may feel that photography is just a capture of reality and not really artwork. Photographers may feel that painting subjects such as landscapes is just an effort to mimic photography, especially for painters who work from photographs.
Photography in the early days using sensitized media (plates, sheets and flexible film) was often not considered artwork since the result was usually a realistic representation of a scene or subject. As photography has advanced into the digital media realm, it can now mimic hand drawn and painted images. If the finished image stimulates a thought or emotion in the viewer, it’s fine art. Boundaries contrasts an overall image with a painterly effect against a floating bubble of reality. Look close enough at the image to see the difference. Is painting outside the bubble of reality? Are you in the bubble, or in the painting? Take your pick.
