    Amazing that this moonstruck tree is alive after whatever caused the damage to its trunk. Hang this on a wall and be ready to answer a question or two. It doesn’t have to be Halloween season; it works year ‘round. Due to the ominous look of the opening in the trunk, it simply had to be enhanced. The tree is located in the north Albuquerque, NM Alameda Open Space.

    Onset is a composite image made with three photographs of the annular eclipse in New Mexico in October 2023 when the moon first started to cover the sun. The annular eclipse is a brief period of a few hours when the moon is slightly smaller than the sun, revealing the corona flare and a bright circle around the moon during the peak of the eclipse. Onset is a photograph made when the moon first started to cover the sun. The finished image shows the sun with sunspots, the sun’s corona, and the shadow side of the moon.
