Lush vegetation and crystal clear water at the output of a naturally formed lake work in unison on a chilly summer day at 12,000 feet above sea level. Just above the timberline in this area in southern Colorado, Clear Lake is a marvel of God’s design. It’s an incredibly calming experience to just stand still and absorb the silence enhanced by a faint trickle of the slow moving water. The saturated color and contrast is like what you see under the trees in a dense forest on a damp summer day, with the added chill of the high country.

As a desert native, Bella was anxious for the glamour of a studio portrait. After doing the required duty of spreading seeds for the next generation, it was time to relax and just enjoy the surroundings. Patience and holding a pose was required for this portrait. Not so easy for such an active relic. Some of Bella’s friends also attended the studio session and enjoyed the momentary glamour as much as she did.

Benny tried to lean into the camera for dramatic effect in this portrait, but it’s hard to view this image without chuckling a bit. Instead of drama, it somehow projects the character of a nosy teenager with a complexion issue. At first look, the curved spines protruding out of the body look a bit threatening, but in reality they are soft and flexible.

This particular tree is a feature in the Botanic Garden on Catalina Island off the coast of California. It resides next to the pathway that leads to the Wrigley Memorial, and stood about 15 feet tall when this photograph was made in October 2017. A bit of “enhancement” was applied to make it “pop” more prominently.

Bella and Marvin meet up in their native homeland for a family gathering. The family tries to do this every couple of years. They don’t have the legs for long walks, so they travel in a vehicle or carried by the large bi-peds they met occasionally. So they preferred to gather in the familiar turf where most of the family lived. The family is at home in their native state of New Mexico, where they enjoy the honor of being designated the “state flower.”

After retirement from an active life, Marvin was ready to relax and hang out with his family. He had spawn a large family in his desert home, and had a variety of friends and relatives, including his cousin Bella. He was known among his family as a wiseacre and show off, but with a friendly and loving heart. He just could not pass up an opportunity for a wisecrack, and dearly loved a good joke and yucking it up (pun intended).

Bella and Marvin frolic in the moonlight to celebrate the singular moth who pollinates them during nighttime hours. The female moth actively collects pollen and deposits it into the flower’s stigma while laying her eggs inside the ovary, exchanging pollination for a place to lay her eggs. So Bella and Marvin get together and yuck it up to celebrate what made their family possible.

This tree is real. It’s amazing that it is still alive after whatever caused the damage to its trunk. Hang this on a wall and be ready to answer a question or two. It doesn’t have to be Halloween season; it works year ‘round. Due to the ominous look of the opening in the trunk, it simply had to be enhanced. The tree is located in the north Albuquerque, NM Alameda Open Space.

The annular eclipse is a brief period of a few hours when the moon is slightly smaller than the sun, revealing the corona flare and a bright circle around the moon during the peak of the eclipse. Onset is a photograph made when the moon first started to cover the sun. The final image shows the sun with sunspots, the sun’s corona, and the shadow side of the moon.

Chile peppers in the southwest USA come in a variety of sizes and flavors, commonly turning from green in their youth to various shades of red and yellow when they ripen. Blue is very unusual, as demonstrated by this Payaso (Spanish for clown). It’s a Big Jim variety of chile with a dose of character you might want to call a “Bloochie” while you keep a straight face.
