This photograph of the Pecos Mission was made in September 2011. The area is a National Historical Park, with restorations, a visitor center and walking paths that tour through the central and outlying areas. The mission church was built in the Pecos Pueblo in 1619 by Spanish explorers. This image will work well on canvas, metal or paper media in almost any room lighting. Description
Pecos area east of Santa Fe, New Mexico was settled centuries before Spanish explorers arrived. The Pecos Pueblo is estimated to have been built around 1100 AD by the local inhabitants. The pueblo became a regional trade center around 1450 AD. In 1619, Spanish explorers led by Juan de Onate built the mission structure. The area Indians rejected the missionaries during the Pueblo Revolt in 1680, but the Spanish returned in 1692. The Pecos Pueblo was continuously occupied until the early 1800’s on what was known as the Santa Fe Trail, a major trading route for travelers going from east to west. In 1838 the few remaining inhabitants left the decaying pueblo and empty mission church and moved to the Jemez Pueblo about 80 miles to the west.
